Abstract:
Heat transport is a key energy transfer process in materials and devices. At nanoscale, the reduced size, low-dimensional nature of samples and the rich spectrum of material imperfection result in unconventional behaviors, which is crucial for the understandings of materials with nanostructures, or the development of nanoscale devices.
In this talk, I will summarize our recent theoretical exploration of heat transport processes in low-dimensional materials and structures. Two topics will be presented – (1) structural disorder induces phonon localization and leads to the mode transition between wave propagation to thermal hopping in two-dimensional materials, and (2) interface engineering offers a new way to manage heat transport and dissipation through nanoscale interfaces. The physics uncovered from computational simulations, experimental studies (in collaboration), and analytical models will be reviewed, followed by a perspective on the challenges in the field.
