报告摘要:

A promising approach of designing mesostructured materials with novel physical behavior is based on combining unique optical and electronic properties of solid nanoparticles with long-range ordering and facile switching of soft matter. This lecture will describe how we experimentally realize molecular-colloidal organic-inorganic composites formed via multi-scale self-assembly in dispersions of anisotropic inorganic nanoparticles in liquid crystals. These composites can be pre-engineered to exhibit novel plasmonic, luminescence, photon-up-converting, and other unusual optical properties controlled by low-voltage fields and light itself. Enriched by the anisotropic elastic and surface anchoring interactions, liquid crystal colloids also exhibit a surprisingly rich and interesting soft matter behavior, which will be the focus of this presentation. 

 

报告人简介:

Ivan I. Smalyukh is a Professor at the Departments of Physics, MSE & ECEE, University of Colorado, Boulder, USA. He is also a founding fellow of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI), a joint institute of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and University of Colorado.He has a broad spectrum of research interests, ranging from topology to self-assembly, from naoscience to renewable energy research, and from magnetism to the development of new optical imaging and manipulation techniques. Smalyukh’s recent awards and honors include 2017 Paris Sciences Chair and CNRS Chair Awards, 2016 APS Fellow Selection by the American Physical Society, 2015 GSoft Award of the American Physical Society and so on. Prof. Smalyukh published over 150 peer-reviewed research articles in top international journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS, PRX etc. He is on editorial boards of two international journals and organized many conferences, workshops, and summer schools.
